With the top three matches set for the 2016 edition of SummerSlam, I thought now would be a great time to take a look back at my favorite matches from what has been either the WWE’s second or third biggest show of the year throughout its run. I remember the first SummerSlam in 1988, which makes me feel a bit old. Therefore, maybe it’s not surprising that my Top 10 list has a bit of a “kids, get off my lawn” vibe with only two of the matches coming from the last decade.
To get fired up for the list, allow me to offer up some musical accompaniment.
Honorable Mention: Ultimate Warrior vs. Rick Rude (1989), Warrior vs. Randy Savage (1992), Bret Hart vs. Doink/Jerry Lawler (1993), Shawn Michaels vs. Vader (1996), Kurt Angle vs. Brock Lesnar (2003), Chris Benoit vs. Randy Orton (2004), John Cena vs. Randy Orton (2007), Edge vs. The Undertaker (2008), Jeff Hardy vs. CM Punk (2009), Christian vs. Randy Orton (2011), Dean Ambrose vs. Seth Rollins (2014), John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar (2014)
10. Mr. Perfect vs. Bret Hart (1991)
At the time, this was considered to be – easily – the best SummerSlam match ever. It’s Bret’s first singles title win and what strikes me about watching it today is just how over he was despite there being no real program or build before the show. For Hennig, his back was in terrible shape at this point and he wouldn’t wrestle again for over a year. You wouldn’t know that by watching the match though. This has aged well and while it’s no longer in discussion for #1, it’s still top ten. The Monsoon-Heenan-Piper announce team was pretty great here too.
