Professional wrestling lost some of its most beloved stars in 2016. The Grim Reaper stayed busy all through the year, taking some of the world’s most legendary stars in all walks of life, and the wrestling world wasn’t spared.
From ECW Originals, to Attitude Era stars, to Japanese legends, we lost some incredible people in 2016. Their legacies live on in the art they produced, the matches they had, the lives they led, and the people they’ve left behind.
Iron Mike Sharpe (October 28, 1951 – January 17, 2016)
For many wrestling fans growing up in the 1980s and 1990s, Sharpe was a familiar name. He was what we called a jobber, mainly used to put over rising stars in the WWF. But, this wasn’t always the case, as Sharpe had a long career where he was perpetually the heel, challenging then-WWF Champion Bob Backlund in the early 80s.
At the time of his passing, back and leg issues were said to have required Sharpe to use a wheelchair for mobility. He had been in and out of the hospital during the months leading up to his death to deal with circulatory issues that had led him to be bed-ridden, including the loss of a leg. He had been released from the hospital just a few days before he passed away.
Iron Mike Sharpe was 64.
