The staff of Top Rope Press put our collective heads together over the past couple of weeks to come up with the best that 2016 had to offer. As far as tag teams go, there really wasn’t much debate. The Young Bucks dominated the tag team scene all over the world in 2016, and they show no signs of slowing down in 2017.
They began the year with regaining the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Titles at WrestleKingdom 10, forming The Elite, the cream of the crop of the Bullet Club, with Kenny Omega, and kicking AJ Styles out of Japan. They would go on to win (at various times throughout the year) the NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Titles with Omega in NJPW, the Ring Of Honor World Tag Team Titles, and the PWG World Tag Team Titles.
They put on one of the year’s best matches at Ladder War 6 in October when they faced off against The Addiction and The Motor City Machine Guns in a crazy ladder match for the ROH World Tag Team Titles. I remember watching it and just praying that no one died in between being thoroughly enthralled at what those six men were doing to entertain their fans.
In November, they re-signed with Ring Of Honor, putting to rest the rumor that they were WWE-bound. And, now, they are headed to The Tokyo Dome to kick off 2017 with a IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Title match with Roppongi Vice.
Love them or hate them, you have to give Matt and Nick Jackson a ton of respect. They have lived their dream, and they haven’t sold out to do it. They have built their brand on their own, and they have to put up with a ton of speculation, innuendo, and abuse from fans because of it. But, at the end of the day, none of that really matters. They are doing what they want to do, how they want to do it, and they are making a hell of a good living in the process.
While some of their antics may be slightly annoying, at the end of the day, The Young Bucks embody professional wrestling. They are fun and immensely talented and endlessly entertaining. While some of their choices in ring gear may make me shake my head in confusion, The Young Bucks are never boring. Add to that the fact that they do what they do, how they do it, for their families, and they have all my respect and then some. Plus, they’ve got some of the cutest kids in all of wrestling. How can you not love them?
But, The Bucks weren’t the only tag team to have a stellar 2016. The two runners up had an incredible year, as well.
