Madison Square Garden WWE Return Booked For July 16
Madison Square Garden has always been a special place for WWE. Through the years, it has been the site for many different pay per views, including the first WrestleMania and first SummerSlam. The most recent PPV held at the Garden was the 2011 Survivor Series. Back when house shows were a treated as a bigger deal, MSG was a monthly stop, typically with Hulk Hogan headlining. For many years, MSG was considered WWE’s “home arena.” But in the 2000s, the cost of running the venue started to get too high from the company’s perspective and the frequency of them running there has drastically decreased, down to one or two times a year.
Still, it is considered “more than a typical house show” when they do run there. One week before WrestleMania 32 was supposed to be “Daniel Bryan Appreciation Night” at MSG, only for Bryan to pull out.
WWE will return to the Garden on July 16, and here is what is being advertised locally:
WWE World Heavyweight champion Roman Reigns vs. AJ Styles.
John Cena vs. Alberto Del Rio.
Dean Ambrose vs. Chris Jericho.
Advertised as making their MSG debuts are: The Vaudevillains, Apollo Crews and Karl Anderson.
Also advertised are WWE Tag Team champions New Day, WWE Women’s champion Charlotte, Ric Flair, Kevin Owens, The Usos, Luke Gallows, Natalya and Stardust.
