The NJPW New Japan Cup finals have come and gone, and Katsuyori Shibata kicked ass and took names tonight, defeating Bad Luck Fale to win his show at any IWGP or NJPW singles title his little black heart desires.

It is expected that Shibata will take his title shot at April’s Sakura Genesis.

Hirai Kawato vs Tomoyuki Oka went to a time limit draw; no winner.

Baby Lions kick us off tonight, but no one is ever going to convince me Oka isn’t an Uncle in disguise. This was actually pretty good. Kawato showed some real good fire, and I fully expected Oka to snap him like a twig. Instead, we got something we rarely get in NJPW: a time limit draw. Interesting turn of events, and neither Oka nor Kawato was happy about it.

David Finlay, Tiger Mask, & Jushin “Thunder” Liger defeated TAKA Michinoku, Takashi Iizuka, & El Desperado.

Nogami was not happy about Iizuka being on the show. Poor little guy looked like he was about to run. Not a bad multi-man match. Despy and TAKA can actually put on good bouts, and with Tiger Mask and Liger, they work very well together. Poor David got beat on by Iizuka and a chair, so that didn’t work out too good him. I giggled, but I think I am one of the four people in the world who has a soft spot for Iizuka. But, David got his revenge when he nailed TAKA with a stunner and won the match for his team. And, Nogami escaped Iizuka’s attention tonight, so all is well in the world.

TenCozy defeated Katsuya Kitamura & Yuji Nagata.

Kitamura’s teeth freak me out. They are too white and too…there. Maybe it’s a mouthpiece/guard. I don’t know, but he needs to do something about it. Another pretty good match. I honestly forgot that TenCozy are the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Champions; nothing has been done with those titles in about a month.

Nagata was particularly ornery tonight; I don’t think he liked being booed by the crowd. It surprised me that Kitamura got as many near falls as he did, but I guess NJPW is higs on this “young” lion. Cozy finally had enough of Kitamura and nailed him with the Western Lariat for the win.

Gedo, Jado, & Hirooki Goto defeated Taichi, Yoshinobu Kanemaru, & Minoru Suzuki.

Goto and Taichi in the same match was almost too much for me to bear.

I am not sure why the focus on MiSu and Goto. I can’t see them setting up a program between the two, especially since ZSJ basically challenged Goto for the NEVER Title. Poor MiSu, a man without a title to go after right now. But, this was more about Gedo/Jado and their upcoming IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Title match with Taichi and Kanemaru. It should be good, but I just have no desire to see the two bookers of the company walking around with titles.

Of course, we got the obligatory ref bump in this one that allowed Gedo to knock Taichi silly with his own mic stand. That was very nice. Jado locked him in the crossface, and Taichi tapped out. See, it’s things like this that necessitate MiSu beating the hell out of him and kicking him out of SZKG.

Los Ingobernables de Japon defeated Taguchi Japan.

Tana had his ridiculous, floofy ponytail tonight; I felt like it was an early birthday present for me. Mocking Tana’s hair never gets old. This one was just crazy fun. Taguchi Japan has managed to worm its way into my heart, and they are just ridiculously entertaining. Pretty much chaos through and through with this one.

Naito did not appreciate Juice’s hair and drug him around by it. Everyone beat up on poor BUSHI, and Hiromu and KUSHIDA tried to destroy each other. Through it all, SANADA’s hair did not move, and Tana’s ponytail stayed fluffy.

I loved this. These two “factions” have had great matches over the past month, and tonight was no different. That being said, though, I hope things change when this tour is over. Naito needs an opponent for the IC Title, those NEVER Six Man Tag Titles need defending, and in the name of all that’s holy, please give BUSHI something meaningful to do. In the end, Naito hit Juice with a low blow to set up Destino for the win. After the match, LIJ just destroyed poor Juice.

YOSHI-HASHI, Kazuchika Okada, Toru Yano, & Tomohiro Ishii defeated Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa, Yujiro Takahashi, & Kenny Omega.

Only for Ishii, Yano, and Kenny Omega do I tolerate being up at stupid o’clock on a Monday morning when I have to be at work for 10 hours after the show is over. Another fun multi-man match with Tama Tonga channeling his inner Seth Rollins/Roman Reigns in his new gear, Ishii running over everyone, and Yano running from Tama.

Someone needs to pull Omega aside and tell him to stop bumping like a damn ping pong ball in these matches; his knees are already bad, and this sure doesn’t help. But, at least he got to get his hands on Okada for a minute or two. They keep teasing this, so there better be a payoff by Dominion and Omega walk out with the title.

As always, Okada won this with The Rainmaker. Ugh. Can we please take the focus off him and let maybe Tacos win a match here and there??

New Japan Cup Finals
Katsuyori Shibata defeated Bad Luck Fale.

I so wanted Shibata to just come out, murder Fale, and call it a day. But, alas, it wasn’t meant to be. Before Shibata could mount any offense at all, Fale drug him out into the crowd, choked him with a fan’s towel, and threw multiple guard rails at him. That was just kinda rude.

Shibata maybe got in two offensive moves during the first 7-10 minutes of this match; he was too busy almost getting his left arm torn out of its socket. He finally seemed to find his footing and dropped Fale with a kick to the face, a bunch of forearm shots, and his patented dropkick in the corner. Fale, though, quickly recovered and the action spilled outside again. Shibata took some frustration out on the relatives of the guard rails Fale wailed on him with earlier and found a towel to choke his opponent with. Turn about is fair play.

Shibata brought out the chairs, but Fale came back with a spear for a near fall. Shibata went for an arm bar submission, but Fale made it to the ropes to break. Then, Shibata tried to kick Fale’s arm off…only to eat a nasty lariat and splash for another near fall. Fale hit the Grenade, but Shibata kicked out at the last split second.

Fale went for the Bad Luck Fall, and Shibata countered it into a sleeper. The big man began to fade, and Shibata hit a PK for the win. Shibata is the 2017 New Japan Cup winner!!!

After the match, Shibata got on the microphone and called out Okada. Looks like we will be getting Okada vs Shibata at Genesis. Okada is gonna get murdered….maybe.
