A video package hyping tonight’s John Cena vs. Randy Orton match opens the telecast. It was actually quite effective. By the way, this is legitimately the first one on one match between the two on SmackDown, LIVE or otherwise. I looked it up myself.

Daniel Bryan, 12 months removed from retiring in this very building, comes out to a warm welcome in his hometown. He admits that the last year has been tough, but can’t wait to put on a good show tonight. He also puts over the fact that he’ll be a dad this year. It’s at that point The Miz comes out for some easy heat. He mocks Bryan for not being able to wrestle and Bryan mocks him back for having the same problem! The interplay between these two was great and drew tremendous heat.

Baron Corbin, Dean Ambrose and AJ Styles, in that order, all eventually sauntered down to the ring. It somewhat watered down what could have been a better segment between just Miz and Bryan. But we do have to get Sunday’s Elimination Chamber match over, mind you. Styles did give us this gem:

Remember in this preview when I said the old Teddy Long staple known as a tag team match wouldn’t be taking place tonight? Well…I was right! Instead, Bryan made a Fatal 4-Way instead and that match would be up next!

Let’s take a look at the best moment, standout star and what fell short tonight on SmackDown LIVE.

Best Moment

So Cena got his win back by pinning Orton. But the real story of tonight’s main event was the continuation of Luke Harper’s face turn. He finally attacked Bray Wyatt after seemingly being unable to do so since the family split. The crowd wanted it and Harper delivered. This was the best moment tonight on SmackDown.

As for the Cena-Orton match, it was good, but was nothing you haven’t seen between the two before. They each kicked out of each other’s finishers. The crowd was hot for the match.
